DIY Jewelry Organizer

The one post on my blog that gets the most views is my all time favorite— the DIY Ikea Makeup Vanity.  When a reader told me that Ikea was discontinuing the Ekby Gruvan shelf, I went out and purchased another one to organize my office at work and also a smaller version.

Both the makeup vanity and office organizer are the larger 46 7/8″ x 8″ shelf, but they also carry a smaller 31 1/8″ x 7 1/2″ shelf.  When I saw it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. =)

Smaller shelf + Like-It Plastic Compartment Drawers (Bed Bath & Beyond) = DIY jewelry organizer

The Like-It Plastic 20-Compartment Tray is perfect for rings and small earrings.  I don’t have that many small earrings so I put one earring in each compartment.  However, there’s definitely enough room to keep both pairs in the same one.

The Like-It Plastic 6-Compartment Tray is perfect for larger earrings.

I use another 6-compartment tray for small necklaces and bracelets.  As you can see, there is plenty of room to put multiple pieces in one compartment.

The Like-It Plastic 2-Compartment Trays come in two different sizes.  The smaller version is the A6, which is 4″ x 6″.  This can hold bracelets or necklaces.

The larger version is the A5, which is 9″ x 6″.  Here I put my bulkier necklaces.

I’m the same way with jewelry as I am with makeup—if I don’t see it, I won’t use it.  I hope this organizer/display will make me want to wear my jewelry more and also make me want to build on my collection because right now it’s not looking very colorful. =)  Keep in mind that if you have a large amount of jewelry, this may not work for you because I hardly have any and it’s pretty full.  As you can see, the compartments are quite roomy so as my collection grows, 2-3 pieces of jewelry can go in each compartment.

What I like most is that you can mix and match the trays to fit your own collection.  Do you have tons of pretty earrings?  How amazing would it look to have six of the 20-compartment trays?!  It would be your very own jewelry store in your bedroom. =)

Mel and I are in the process of rearranging our master bedroom so I won’t be installing the jewelry organizer for a few weeks.  So in the meantime, it’ll sit on my dresser. =)  Once I do install it, I’ll place it on the wall with brackets.  Perhaps it can do double-duty next to my bed as a nightstand.

NOTE:  I found out that the white shelf is being discontinued, but they still carry the black version.  You might still find some white ones at your local Ikea store.

What a lovely idea! Do you think you could use the 31 1/8 x 7 1/2 shelf could be used as a vanity table if you have a small collection of makeup?

    • Hi Julie,

Yes, you could definitely use the smaller shelf for a smaller vanity, but keep in mind that since it is only 7.5 inches deep, there won’t be a lot of room underneath for your legs. Try picturing the exact dimensions in your room first to get an idea of how small it really. For the smaller shelf, definitely use brackets and NOT legs. If you still like the larger shelf but have a small makeup collection, think about also putting your makeup brushes in the shelves as well (they won’t collect as much dust this way), your skincare products, Q-tips and cotton balls. Or maybe half makeup and half jewelry! =) Good luck!
